Small and large farms, and commercial or industrial pesticide

applicators have a great opportunity in March to clean out their sheds

and warehouses of old, unusable, and potentially illegal pesticides.

Pesticides which have been banned or restricted, were left on properties

at time of transfer, or just are no longer useful can all be brought in for

free disposal to either of the Jackson or Josephine County events in

early March. Pesticides accepted for disposal include DDT, Lorsban,

Guthion, Malathion, Sevin, and others. Materials NOT accepted at this

event are waste paint (these may be returned to paint stores), waste oil

(contact your waste disposal company for information about oil disposal),

and home use pesticides (household waste collection events are

planned in White City in May and in Grants Pass in the fall). Triple-

rinsed or pressure washed plastic pesticide containers can also be

disposed at these events.

On March 4, collection will take place from 8 am to 2 pm at the

Redwood Transfer Station in Grants Pass, a location provided by

Southern Oregon Sanitation. Appointments will be made once

registration forms are received. No registration is needed for container

On March 5, collection will be from 8 am to 2 pm at the Rogue

Disposal Transfer Station in White City, a location provided by Rogue

Disposal & Recycling. Appointments will be made once registration

forms are received.

Pre-registration is required by February 18 to make an

appointment for all pesticide disposal. All registration information will

remain confidential. The form is available at www.jswcd.org. Assistance

with the form is available from Graham Gadzia of Clean Harbors

Environmental Services at 206-900-3930. Local assistance is available

through Patton Environmental LLC at 541-690-9983.

Another opportunity like this may not be available for decades, so

the agencies involved hope that farmers and pesticide users will clean

out their storage areas and help make Southern Oregon safer by

removing these wastes from the valley.
